Rotterdam is the second largest city of the Netherlands. You can see that reflection of contemporary architecture to the character of the city, in almost every street of the city. Althought Rotterdam, which is founded on the bank of the Maas River, suffered a lot in World War II, the city reached its present state by rebuilding entirely.
Markthal, newly opened in the heart of Rotterdam, which has interesting structures in terms of architecture, is enough to surprise the viewers. I was in Rotterdam after a 3-hour, 40-minute flight from Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. The citizenM design hotel which I stayed also had a character that coincide with the modern design of the city.
The view I saw when I walked from the hotel to the city's square after it get dark, fascinated me. I was looking at a huge structure from the outside, and the interior of the structure was displaying a wonderful view that decorated with flowers. I could not visit because it was closed. I couldn't help myself stopping by this wonderful market for the next 2 days.
Markthal, Rotterdam's new covered market area, make you fell like you've slipped into the rabbit hole in the wonderland. There are even those who say that this place which has a fantastic weather is the Dutch version of Rome's Sistine Chapel.
Markthal, which was built as two separate apartments when it was first built, was later turned into a closed market area by combining it in the shape of reverse horseshoe from the center. Markthal, the first closed market area of the Netherlands and built on 100,000 m2, is also home to 228 apartment houses.
Some of the apartments have inward facing windows. As a matter of fact, according to Dutch law, houses must have windows that look outward to take the natural daylight. The interior surface covered with 4500 aluminum panels is painted with colorful vegetable, fruit and flower figures. Because of the illumination, it gives the impression that it is a view reflected from the projection device.
There are more than 20 shops and 9 restaurants on the market area. A pleasant place to eat, drink and shop. The tulips identified with the Netherlands, the renowned exquisite cheese varieties of the country, the vegetables and fruit rayons are aligned. This is a blissful place. Whether you go shopping or have a seat, feel the ambience.
I like market places. The people here are more friendly and warm, because they are interlocutor with tourists or local people like me who come from different parts of the world. Everyone is doing their job with relish. Even if you don't buy anything, they chats with you, offer something to you. If you come by Rotterdam, stop by here.
This interesting structure is expected to attract between 4,5 and 7 million visitors every year. Markthal can be visited on Sundays and national holidays between 12: 00-18: 00. Except for this, it can be visited every day between 10:00 – 20:00.
